Best Time of Year for NJ Engagement Photos
If you’re planning your engagement session wondering where to take engagement photos in New Jersey, you’re not alone! Choosing the right location can completely shape how your photos feel. As a New Jersey engagement photographer, I always guide my couples through some of my favorite NJ engagement photo locations so we can find a place that feels natural and meaningful to them.
Your location doesn’t need to be complicated or far away. It just needs to reflect your relationship. Whether that looks like the beach, a beautiful garden, a city setting, or somewhere special to you, New Jersey has so many beautiful options!
Below are some of my favorite NJ engagement photo locations, along with a few helpful tips to make choosing your spot feel easier.

Beach NJ Engagement Photo Locations
If you’re thinking of beachy NJ engagement photos, these locations give beautiful soft lighting, lots of open space, and a more relaxed setting that keeps the focus on you.

Long Branch Beach Engagement Photos – Long Branch, NJ
Long Branch, NJ is a great option if you want a classic beach setting with a little more energy. There’s plenty of space to move around, and the light here is especially beautiful closer to sunset.
This area can be a bit busier, especially in the summer, so I usually recommend planning your session on a weekday or closer to sunrise or sunset. The boardwalk nearby also gives you a little variety if you want more than just sand and water!
*During beach season, Long Branch requires beach badges, typically under $10 per person. Sunrise and sunset sessions help avoid crowds and get the best light. Check the official Long Branch beach website for details.

Garden & Nature NJ Engagement Photo Locations
If you’re looking for greenery and a softer, more peaceful setting, these locations offer beautiful natural backdrops.
Ringwood Botanical Gardens Engagement Photos – Ringwood, NJ
Ringwood Botanical Gardens is one of the most romantic garden NJ engagement photo locations. It’s filled with stone pathways, beautiful blooms, a historic mansion, and so much variety throughout the property.
Spring and summer are especially stunning here, but it photographs well into early fall too. This is a great option if you want something that feels intentional, elevated, and still very natural!
*A permit is required for professional photography and photography shoots.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum Engagement Photos – Morristown, NJ
Frelinghuysen Arboretum sits on 124 acres and gives you a great mix of open lawns, gardens, and beautiful landscaping. It feels clean and timeless, which helps make for beautiful photos.
It’s a great option if you want something simple but still visually refined.
*A permit is required for professional photography and photography shoots at Frelinghuysen Arboretum. To see more information on this, visit their photography and filming permits page.
Willowwood Arboretum Engagement Photos – Far Hills, NJ
Willowwood Arboretum is one of those NJ engagement photo locations that feels quiet and tucked away. It has a more natural, less manicured look compared to some other gardens, but that makes it perfect if you want something more relaxed and understated.
If you’re looking for a location full of willow trees, gardens, meadows, and vegetation but still feels lowkey, Willowwood might be exactly what you’re looking for!
*A permit is required for professional photography and photography shoots at Willowwood Arboretum. To see more information on this, visit their photography and filming permits page.
Sayen House & Gardens Engagement Photos – Hamilton Square, NJ
Sayen House & Gardens is known for its seasonal flowers and walking paths. It’s especially beautiful in the spring when everything is in bloom!
This is a great NJ engagement photo if you want color and variety without needing to travel between locations.
*No permits or entrance fee are required for engagement photos at Sayen House & Gardens.
Jardin de Buis Engagement Photos – Califon, NJ
Jardin de Buis feels more formal and European-inspired. The landscaping is very intentional, which gives your photos a refined and elegant feel. If you want to feel like you’re in the French Countryside, this NJ engagement photo location might be the perfect fit. This is perfect for couples who want something a little more styled while still being outdoors.
*Jardin de Buis offers engagement sessions for $500 per hour, which includes access to the outdoor gardens, barn exteriors, and courtyards. Indoor spaces, including the greenhouse, are available for an additional $500 per hour.
Van Vleck House & Gardens Engagement Photos – Montclair, NJ
Van Vleck House gives the perfect mix of gardens and estate-style architecture. It’s a really versatile location with multiple backdrops in one place, making it perfect for NJ engagement photos.
This is a great option if you want variety while still keeping everything close and easy!

City & Waterfront NJ Engagement Photo Locations
If you want your NJ engagement photos to feel more modern and structured, these locations offer skyline views, architecture, and a little more variety!
Liberty State Park Engagement Photos – Jersey City, NJ
Liberty State Park in Jersey City is one of the best NJ engagement photo locations if you want skyline views without going into New York City.
You get open space, waterfront views, and beautiful backdrops of the skyline all in one location. It’s perfect for couples who want something that feels urban but still low-key with a variety of backdrops like Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan Skyline, and Ellis Island!

Jersey City, NJ Engagement Photos
Jersey City offers a mix of waterfront views and city streets. There’s more to it than just Liberty State Park like mentioned above. There are so many different spots to work with, which makes it easy to get a variety of looks in one session!
Historic & Park NJ Engagement Photo Locations
If you’re searching for something with a little history and character, these NJ engagement photo locations offer a setting that feels more timeless!
Jockey Hollow Engagement Photos – Morristown, NJ
Jockey Hollow is perfect if you want something that’s quiet, open, and a little more natural. The mix of fields, trees, and historic elements gives it a really balanced look.
It’s especially beautiful in the fall, but works well in multiple seasons. This is a great option if you want something simple and meaningful!

Best Time of Year for NJ Engagement Photos
Honestly, New Jersey offers something different in every season, so the best time really depends on the look you’re going for.
Spring: Blooming flowers, soft colors, and comfortable temperatures
Summer: Ideal for beach sessions, especially near sunset
Fall: Warm tones, changing leaves, and some of the most popular dates
Winter: A quieter look with fewer crowds and a more minimal feel
I always help my couples choose a season that fits both their schedule and the overall feel they want.

How to Choose the Right NJ Engagement Photo Locations for You
When choosing between these NJ engagement photo locations, the most important thing is picking a place that feels like you.
A few questions to ask yourselves:
- What kind of setting do you naturally lean towards?
- Do you want something quiet or a little more energetic?
- Is there a place that already means something to you?
You don’t need to overthink it. Some of the best sessions happen in places that feel natural to you. Your location doesn’t have to be popular or overly scenic. If there’s somewhere meaningful in your relationship, that can make your photos feel even more special. At the end of the day, it’s your connection that brings everything to life!

NJ Engagement Photo FAQ’s
Some NJ engagement photo locations do require permits, especially gardens, parks, or venues. It usually depends on the specific location. I always help guide my couples through this process so nothing gets overlooked and everything feels easy leading up to your session!
The best time for engagement photos is typically early morning or close to sunset, but this can also be location dependent. The light is softer, more flattering, and helps create that natural, timeless look. It also tends to be less crowded, which makes the experience feel more relaxed!
Start by thinking about what feels natural to you. Do you love the beach, the park, or being in the middle of a city? Your location doesn’t need to be the most popular or scenic spot. What matters most is choosing a place where you feel comfortable and connected.
NJ beaches can be beautiful any time of year. Summer brings more energy and warmer weather, while fall, winter, and early spring tend to be quieter and more peaceful. It really depends on the kind of setting and feeling you want for your photos.
Yes, absolutely! Some of the most special sessions happen in places that are personal to you, like where you met, a favorite date spot, or somewhere you spend time together. Your connection is what brings your photos to life, no matter where your session takes place.
