Virginia and Brandon eloped quietly, and a few days later. We met up in Central Park for their elopement portraits. Choosing Bethesda Terrace as the backdrop to celebrate their new marriage.
There’s a specific kind of ease that shows up in portraits once the wedding itself is already behind a couple. The nerves are gone, they have made the big decision, and what’s left is pure relief and inside jokes. Exactly the energy Virginia and Brandon brought to their Bethesda Terrace portrait session.

Bethesda Terrace has always been one of my favorite spots for couples’ portraits and engagement photos in Central Park. The arched walkways and carved sandstone details give you that grand, timeless New York backdrop without needing a single extra prop, soft and architectural in the arcade, open and romantic out by the fountain.
A quick note if you’re planning your own Central Park portrait session here: Central Park has closed Bethesda Fountain for restoration right now. (You can find more information here.) The fountain basin itself won’t be flowing or photographable right now. The good news is the terrace, arcade, and staircases are still fully open for photos. And if you want more variety, Central Park has no shortage of other beautiful photo spots nearby; Bow Bridge, The Mall and Literary Walk, Belvedere Castle, and Conservatory Garden all make wonderful additions to a session.

Their elopement portraits at Bethesda Terrace was full of laughter, with those sweet, quiet moments woven in between. The way they looked at each other walking across the terrace, or caught each other’s eye mid-laugh in the arcade. Those are the kinds of in-between moments I always hope for, the ones that happen because they’re simply enjoying being married, not because anyone posed them that way.

That’s really what these sessions are about; not a list of poses to get through, but two people enjoying themselves. Virginia and Brandon didn’t need a big production to make their portraits feel meaningful; they just needed a little time, a beautiful backdrop, and the space to simply enjoy being newlyweds together.

I love being part of this kind of celebration, the quiet, just-us joy that comes after eloping. If you’re newly married or planning to elope soon and want portraits that feel like you, I’d love to hear your story. You can learn more about me here or reach out to inquire about your wedding date!
